This analysis is based on the sample of married/cohabitating couples from the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS). I use a dynamic panel random effects probit model and I control for sample attrition. Redundancies (different from dismissals) in declining industries are used as an indicator of exogenous job loss. Two sensitivity analyses are conducted, including instrumental variable estimation. Results to date show evidence that couples in which the husband experiences a job loss are more likely to experience poor mental health. Multiple transmission channels (including, but not limiting to the income effect) of the shock are investigated. The impact of job loss on family dissolution (with Denise Doiron)The impact of involuntary job displacements on the probability of divorce is analyzed using discrete duration models. The analysis uses the sample of couples from the British Household Panel Survey and distinguishes between types of displacements. Results show that couples in which the husband experiences a job loss are more likely to divorce. Redundancies have the smallest and most short-lived effects relative to dismissals and temporary job endings. This is consistent with the interpretation of redundancies as capturing negative income shocks while other types of job loss also convey new information about potential future earnings and match quality.Conference presentations2009 (May): IZA Summer School in Labour Economics2009 (June): XXIII Annual Conference of the European Society for Population Economics (ESPE), Seville Paper presented: The impact of job loss on family mental health 2009 (January) 6th CAER Workshop in Health Economics Paper presented: The impact of job loss on family mental health
